TV rondup before more things get going again
It's pretty divided between lots of scattered Mr. Selfridge thoughts and brief snippets of just enjoying Galavant.
Galavant 2x01-2
I don’t think I’ll have much to say about this show, since it’s pretty much just fun (I really haven’t been watching comedies this year I realize). I’m super glad it’s back, though I might have wanted another song or two. I really don’t want to deal with it plot-wise or point out that Richard has actually been a really awful person up to now and I’m not sure the show wants me to remember that, I just want to have fun with it.
Mr. Selfridge 4x01
As usual there’s a lot of balls in the air this time, so just a smattering of thoughts. I kind of wish I shipped Harry/Mae because they hit a lot of my usual ship kinks (long term friendship, making each other better (in some way) than they would be apart, that kind of thing) but since I’m pretty sure Mae isn’t a real person therefore doesn’t end up with Harry I can’t say I ship it. I did however call last season (though can’t remember if I said) that Mae probably bought up Loxley’s shares in the store, so validation there. They are hitting the nail pretty hard that Harry’s in for a big time fall, even if I wasn’t clued in to that part of the story of Selfridge I’d probably be expecting it; though I’m pretty sure the writers likely wanted to do this story in five seasons rather than four so there would have been a season set in the early 20s rather than skipping forward so far. The head of display continues to be a non-entity, even more so than the guy last season who wasn’t quite in tune with the store’s presentation vibe, leaving me with...hope that the Leclairs will return (I hesitate because with Harry about to fall I kind of would rather imagine them having their own lives away from the mess), I want them to at least put in an appearance because I miss them, but I resign myself to settling for maybe George mentioning them a few times. (Speaking of, it was weird to hear Harry refer to Mrs. Towler meaning Connie because I had to really think it through to get past my initial ‘wait, Agnes...no that doesn’t work’ reaction.) Anyone else remember how Mae and Victor used to knock boots (admittedly 20 years ago in show time)? Because I definitely thought of it when they met up here. Also, I wonder if Grove has the self-awareness to worry about Meryl working in the store because she might get hit on by an older guy looking for an ill-advised choice in baby-mama; but it’s Grove, so probably not. I don’t know if I expect Mardle or Violette to return this season, but I hope we get a little more from them than this, the show feel slacking without Josie. Plus, I always expected that Beatrice would finally get a chance to be a character (the only Selfridge child who hasn’t) but didn’t yet and seems unlikely with how much else is already going on. Also, it’s weird how many people now get to call Harry “Harry” rather than “Mr. Selfridge.”

I would say the second half was better than the first, but it was mostly all enjoyable. There was a slightly higher song content in the second half it seemed, plus we all know I enjoy some angst. I’m not sure quite where some of the random side bits are leading, but I have no problem waiting to see.

I still can’t quite let go of my stupid want for Mae so somehow cause Agnes and Henri to reenter the story, so that’s where my mind went when she was talking about bringing in whoever she wanted. It’s stupid and highly unlikely (plus if it was an option Harry would jump on it in a heartbeat), but it’s what I want. And Tilly’s introduction was very much in a vein with Agnes Towler so it took me a while to stop thinking ‘I knew Agnes Towler and I highly suspect you are no Agnes Towler’ but she did end up being sweet enough and I want her to succeed, so I guess she continues in that vein. Is it creepy to other people that Harry’s making out/hooking up with Rosie? I haven’t noticed if Rose’s picture is still in the office, but it still seems dicey to me. I did think during Harry and Lois’ scene that she was probably going to die before long (plus she’s pretty old) so I guess I wasn’t surprised it happened this episode, but it’s still sad. I guess I have somewhat fewer things to say about this one.
