More TVD book thoughts

I decided to stick with the Stefan’s Diary books for another round. Now I’m taking a short break from TVD books but when I get back to them I’ll probably start the Return books, which I hear are awful. SO I complaining I do about this one will be nothing next to that I can only assume.

SD: vol 3: The Carving

I think I liked that one, quite a bit even maybe. It’s not exactly one of the great stories of western literature or anything, but it was a pretty good story. Most of my objections were minor, or mostly due to the show rather than the book itself (either because it doesn’t fit with the show or its stuff I object to on the show too).

Having rushed through the character shifts in the previous book, Stefan and Damon are pretty identifiable as themselves here; Stefan amusingly emo and Damon in full troll mode. That also means that neither of them really get much more development here. It’s a fun adventure with the Salvatores, and as that it’s enjoyable, trying to grasp deeper meaning in though makes it a lot less so.

Since there are still more books in this series that might build on the thoughts here I won’t complain too much about the way it bring up stuff that it has no reason to bring up, which in my opinion weakens this as its own story. I will point out that the show never implied the Salvatores had heard anything about the Originals or the Curse or the doppelgangers before it came up in the show. But I won’t dwell too much on how it’s just useless info put in here because it becomes relevant in the show until I see if anything else is done with it in the books.

Because if we’re going to have these books build on their own story the threat of Klaus and his minions should really be a thing for Stefan now (and Damon, but the stories are told by Stefan so it really has to come up for him). Until Stefan DOES meet him in the 20s of course, which could be interesting to see how the books might deal with the fact that Stefan doesn’t even remember that until Klaus lets him remember. But at the pase the first three books have gone, much like the show, that will be MANY books down the road before that time frame comes up (at this point three books have covered less than a year, maybe even less than six months).

The Salvatores are both pretty stupid in this one, but they’re baby vamps so I guess I can blame it on that (to some extent, they’re also Stefan and Damon, so of course they’re idiots). I actually liked Lexi better in this one than I did in Bloodlust. And you know how I am for any plot even remotely involving the Originals.

The ore I think about it, even to review it, the less I think I liked it, but I definitely enjoyed it as I was reading it. It doesn’t quite work with show canon in my opinion, but I don’t think it’s completely impossible to fit in either, with a little fudging on the exact events. I do think my issues with the books’ characterization and pacing are kind of building on each other though, because while I thought this was a better story than the last one, it was still bogged down by the issues that one left.

Hmm, I have those type of issues with the show too...
