reflecting on vids day 1
Staring from last December (almost exactly one year ago) I have made 20 vids. I'm on 48 or 49 total (I should probably check since I want to do something big for my 50th vid) but to snag and modify a meme I'm going to reflect on those twenty.
Robin Hood: Big Machine
Pride & Prejudice: Foolish Pride
Multi Fandom: Blind Love
Anne of Green Gables: I Just Can't Live a Lie
SG1: He Hates Me
Robin Hood: Hand Me Down
Doctor Who: Giving In
North & South: Swans
The Office: Yours to Hold
Doctor Who: Donna and the Doc
Anne of Green Gables: Anne's Little Wonders
Babylon 5: Not Ready to Make Nice
SG1: Movie Making with SG1
Doctor Who: The Older I Get
Doctor Who: I Don't Want to Live on the Moon
Futurama: Fry and the Mermaid
Multi Fandom: Men of Their Word
Robin Hood: Schadenfreude
Doctor Who: Unsung Hero
Chronicles of Narnia: God Says Nothing Back
My favorite vid this year (of my own):
Hmm...one of my Doctor Who ones I'm pretty sure. But for different reason I love my last few of them, one if Doctor/Rose, one is just the Doctor, and one is Harriet. Let's just pick none of them and go with my happy Doctor/Rose video 'Giving In' even though I'm not sure that's actually the case ('favorite' opinions is subject to change frequently).
My best vid this year:
I think "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon' has to win this one. I think it came out exactly as it was meant to and actually better than I had anticipated. I think it got the meaning across clearly and sweetly, and judging by the comments I've gotten it did it to more than me. Poor Doctor, he needs a family so badly.
Vid most tragically underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Um...most of them? Okay cheep answer but yeah. So without taking the cheep but true answer, I think my Anne of Green Gables vids, particularly 'Just Can't Live a Lie' are underappreciated. Anne and Gil are just so cute and sweet that I think everyone should know it. And since B5 in general is underappreciated by extension obviously my B5 vid is.
Most overrated vid, in my opinion:
As much fun as my Futurama vid is, I think it might be a bit overrated. Sure it appeals to a wider fan base than most of my vids do I'm sure, and while the song is an awesome fit with the subject I don't think it's my best work. It's not bad but I wish some of my others had the kind of viewer numbers that one gets.
Most fun vid:
Most fun to make more most fun product? Most fun to make I almost think was 'Movie Making with SG1' because I got to amuse myself with all the 200 clips that make me laugh the most. Most fun to watch...'He Hates Me' I guess SG1 vids I just find amusing so far (to be fair I haven't done angst wow) even if I still can't get over the "the song says brown but Daniel has blue eyes" conundrum.
Most unintentionally telling vid:
'I Don't Want to Live on the Moon' was originally conceived as a Doctor/Rose vid and how Rose was home to him even while traveling with other people. And while it is still that in many ways, when I had to convert it into a character vid for the challenge I wound up with something much more telling about my character perception of the Doctor which I didn't plan on, I was just thinking of making it as subtextually shippy as possible.
"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for me" vid:
There are some possibly implications in 'Hand Me Down' I was not in mind of at the time. Marian just doesn't come off as I meant her to, and I didn't exactly mean for her to come off in a completely positive light. Yeah, that's the best I can think of.
Vid that shifted my own perception of the characters:
'Swans' gave me a chance to get in the head of John Thornton a bit more, which was good and I'm really glad I did it.
Hardest vid to put together:
The Harriet Jones one, that one had too many musical interludes, and they couldn't be chopped out (at least not me), plus the shortage of clips. Any song with an excess (as deemed by me) of musical interlude is hard for me, grr.
Worst vid:
I'm going to say 'Donna and the Doc' because there's some stuff that just doesn't work (although I do still like the fact that I managed to fit Rose into it because really a PiC vid *should* include that scene.
Easiest vid to put together:
'Foolish Pride' easily. I made that one in the course of one evening. Granted the idea had been in my head for ages since the song was so fitting, but it also didn't throw me very mush in the way of weird curves that would have made it harder.
Vid I'd like to revise (but probably won't):
Again, besides saying "Most of them"? Got to go with 'Schadenfreude,' there's some timing and clip choices that could have used some extra thought at the time I see now. Some of it I like but there's definitely parts that I am less than happy with, I wanted it to be uproariously funny but it's not and I still think it could have been.
Vid I wish I'd finished:
A couple, but the one that really disappoints me was that I meant to vid Don't Blink by Kenny Chesney early on because "Blink" was quite an invite to make a vid to that song, but I never finished it. Some of the blame lies with WMM since I seem to recall now I got most of it done before I got tired of fighting with it, but or course there's also my ability to be distracted by shiny things.
Vid I didn't create but swear I will, someday:
More Than it Seems, I swear I have an awesome idea for this song, and started it at one point but didn't get too far before I knew it wasn't coming together yet so I needed to go back to the drawing board (well not quite, concept is still there).
Extra Questions
Looking back, did you do more vidding than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Both more and less. I did more than I did last year, so more than I would have expected going into the year I think, but then there were some clumps where I did a lot and kind of started to think I'd end up doing a lot, but then I did less later in the year so I didn't measure up to my mid year estimate but overall more than I had expected.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you vid that you would never have predicted in January 2008?
Anne of Green Gables. I would not have expected I would decide to vid that even though it's one of my favorite shows ever. I would not have thought of it as vidding material before.
Did you take any vidding risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Yeah. I entering into a weekly vid challenge (which has since fizzled) and created vids that I knew people would watch without necessarily knowing the story behind them and learned that they can still view and like them.
I vidded several different fandoms, some I know aren't all that widely known and still posted them for people to view and learned that there are some viewers (sometimes more than I thought) and also that it doesn't really matter.
I started having
starlightmoonla view some of my first drafts of vids to get some feedback (sadly she's not always available for this) which even though she's very nice about it always makes me nervous since I don't consider them finished and learned that it actually made me more motivated so that I could show the final draft off.
Do you have any vid or profic goals for the New Year?
I have a list of ideas at various stages of readiness that's getting very long indeed. One of these days I should really figure out how to use something other than WMM but I'm not sure that's a goal. My big one is that I want to try making Daniel/Rose vids (maybe just vid I admit) because they've become such a big pairing for me that I want to vid them even if no real footage exists to use for it (and it doesn't obviously). Should be a challenge but I hope it'll work.
Of course I also have writing goals but...yeah; and you know, real life ones that I'd really like to do.
