I cannot seem to find a lj-layout I really like this is upsetting me, maybe one day I'll spring for a paid account so I don't have to deal with the ads and have other options.
Have you tried looking at layouts other people have made, not just the options that you can choose from on the customize journal page? There are tons of awesome ones out there for free accounts. Or if you find something that's kind of what you want, I'm pretty handy with CSS and could tweak it however you want.
I'm not sure Torchwood would be enough either but it would at least have Jack to oggle.
