Double TV roundup

So getting ready to start this week’s round of TV, must be time to post the last two weeks’ worth of reactions to what I was watching.

Flash 2x07
I think I liked that episode a lot. There was a lot going on in both plot and character and it all worked pretty well together. I do still have issues with the was Henry’s character is treated, he was used well here by and large, but I definitely think there’s a lot more they could be doing. I did feel like there were some hints that they’re aware of that though; when Barry asked about him going camping on his own I got the subtext to wanting to go camping with his dad after all these years, and there’s definitely hints at the conflict between being part Henry and part Joe’s son and all the things Henry couldn’t be there for; but none of it’s being explored very well just yet. And while I don’t mind giving things time to simmer, I’d rather it was actually being further developed while it simmers instead of just disappearing for episodes on end. That was far from the most important thing in the episode, but it was the thing I really wanted to say something on. Except that I kind of wonder is Harry is going to somehow become possessed by the spirit of Wells somewhere along the line, I sort of feel like they’re going to find a way to bring old Wells back into things at least briefly down the road.

Castle 8x07
I definitely liked that episode, and it was the right point in the season to have an episode like this, I’m just not real sure what the moral/take away from it was. The resolution on the Espo-Ryan conflict was a bit trite, and the bullet stopped by notebook is never very believable, but there are still things that can be done from this period of fallout. I think a lot of the problem evident here with the Castle-Beckett separation is that we’re still seeing most of it from Castle’s perspective, I still don’t know where Kate’s living at this point, when we do get her perspective (which we did get some of here as opposed to last week, but not enough and I think overall it’s still very Rick focused) it adds a lot to the dynamic; they’ve been co-leads for so long that cutting back and not playing Beckett’s story as much as usual is hurting this plot. The case was okay I guess, but it’s never why I watch the show; and I did like getting some acknowledgement that Kate isn’t exactly unknown to general populations.

Arrow 4x07
I’m a little torn on this one. On one hand it had some really good action scenes, on the other, it was pretty heavy on the action scenes. The character moments were pretty good, but not quite given enough focus. I don’t really like what they’ve chosen to do with Andy’s character, but I do like the effects in has on the main characters. It certainly has things I’m fairly good with; Thea’s story shows some interesting promise, the show did eventually remember that Lyla exists as well as Carly and the kid, I really liked Oliver’s reaction to things, Digg and Laurel continue to make a pretty good team; I just can’t say I loved the episode. Actually it was probably better than Flash, I just expect to like Arrow so much more.

Castle 8x08
Finally some real addressing of the season’s ongoing story arc; not exactly progress, but at least willing to change the game some. It was finally a Beckett focused episode I’d been needing in this story, and the plot of the week was incredibly incidental to the things being done on the bigger front, all of which is good. And Castle and Beckett are kind of back together, like maybe the writers realized this wasn't a great idea. I am however growing suspicious of Castle’s conversation box, so much potential for security concerns there.

OUaT 5x06
On most technical levels, this episode was pretty bad. The whole flashback plot means I have to buy that Merida could haul Belle away before the rest of the group realized they’d gone missing and not be able to catch up; the Brave characters just don’t look right trying to do live action (at least not here), I found it pretty obvious Merida’s hair was a wig this time out and I almost never notice that sort of thing, I don’t care for Rumble and Belle’s relationship here just from the way it’s presented (and I usually mostly like them if admit I shouldn’t), the flashback story is pretty regressing to Merida’s character, and while I don’t mind having some scenes setting up for future events that’s about all that the non Rumbelle plot seemed to be. Add to it that given the way I’ve watching it I can’t remember it the present day characters know not to trust Arthur I kept expecting more twist in that story than we got. For all that, it wasn’t a bad episode, focusing on Belle and Rumple rather than Emma gives it a heads up on other episodes; not great obviously, but not so bad either.

Agents of SHIELD 3x08
I think that was a pretty good episode. Thing is I realize I no longer have much desire to rewatch episodes, even a planned end of season type viewing, but I am enjoying them week to week; so I guess my expectations/desires from the show have shifted allowing me to enjoy it on the level it actually provides enjoyment. I am also glad we’re back dealing with Hydra being behind things, that appeals to me, plus an episode light on Skye, I think this one had some advantages, even if the show continues to refuse to respect my shipping taste.
