Another TV rundown

Reign 3x01
Obviously some of this is going to be catch up from last week (maybe even more), and here’s one. I found this to be a really weird episode. For one thing the tone was all over the place and the scenes in England were especially wacky. For two, the amount of travel and message sending around 16th century Europe must mean this covered several weeks and I found it distracting. I am glad Francis told Mary about his death sentence, I feel we’ll get a lot better story about them facing it together than his dealing with it alone. I’m less happy that the show continues to have no idea what to do with Bash so continues to stick him off in weird side plots. I’m glad the show’s back, but this was a weird note to start on.

Agents of SHIELD 3x02
That was a better episode than the first one, probably because it was a team story rather than Skye and the Inhumans. Plus, seriously Skye, you want a guy on your team who can’t work a doorknob currently? There’s seeing the potential in someone but that’s just dumb; and really a halfway house is probably better because pushing new Inhumans right into SHIELD gets a little close to drafting them into a war they may not want to fight and that’s wrong. But the A plot and the May plot were both good, although May wanting a ‘normal life’ feels a little strange; not that she would want to know if she still had the ability to have a life outside of SHIELD, but that she would call it a ‘normal life;’ a better rounded life though, I believe she’s curious about that. And I feel a little cheated as I liked where Simmons’ character was going last year, with her fear and mistrust of the Inhumans putting her in conflict with the rest of the show, and I feel that probably got junked for a new story this year. Also, if Ward survives this season of the show I may be done, because Ward should have died back in s1 and somehow he’s held on this long, it’s past time for him to go.

Castle 8x04
There is a lot of good character stuff going on here, even if I called the murderer about halfway through (I’ve gotten pretty good at Doyalist reasoning out who done it on this show). I’m not sure there’s much to say as it didn’t forward the story any, just gave some good moments for where we are at this point.

Flash 2x02
Another kind of meh episode getting things going on the season; understandable but not all that great as a story. Jay is a good addition, assuming we get to keep him, though I’m not thrilled about Jay/Caitlyn possibilities that are being set up, and being the CW it’s probably more about a love triangle when Ronnie inevitably resurfaces than about forward progression for any of the characters (for as many shows as I watch on the CW, I can pretty down on it sometimes). Also, the more focus Patti got the less I trust her, but we’ll see I guess. Again, a serviceable episode, but left me feeling pretty meh by the end.

Arrow 4x02
I feel like they’re rushing things a bit here, because we covered a lot of ground in this episode. I wish the show could take some time to breathe and have even a pause of a status quo (I oppose long term status quos being adhered to at the cost of character growth, but I approve of taking things in steps instead of a constant surge onward), but this may be a situation where they have to cover a lot of ground before the end of the year because of how LoT is scheduled and where people and things need to be by then, in addition to moving this show’s own plot forward. It was a pretty good episode, but this season will be exhausting at this pace. Also, I’m glad they’re finally addressing the fact that Dig and Felicity don’t have code names, and may have been pointed out here as setup if fandom’s collective assumption turns out to be true (I thought it too, so I’m not knocking it, in fact I’m pointing out where it might be on that track).

Plenty of baseball and some real life stuff made this a pretty short list this week.
