This week's TV roundup

So as you might have guessed, baseball ate p a lot of my TV time this week, but here’s a run down of the shows I got to.

Downton Abbey 6x03
I’m basically saying what I have been the last few weeks, it’s all good but nothing I really feel much need to talk about. It’s what you expect from Downton Abbey and the finality of this season is very much evident, but aside from maybe Edith’s story I don’t know that there was much obvious forward motion (I suppose the wedding was forward motion, but it was more of a pivot to whatever the next step is...kind of), although there are quite a few open opportunities for story left in the season.

Castle 8x03
The Castle and Alexis stuff has more or less stolen the show, I always loved their parts but now we can have even more of them and I remain very much in favor of that. But if the Caskett separation lasts all season it’s just going to kill me somewhere along the way; I’ll give them until Christmas or maybe Feb sweeps, but there better be really good stories told with it, and I’m talking sticking to the arc development consistently and good case of the week stories (or of course just going arc story, I’m always down with that). This was a pretty good standard, even if I’m forgotten who the old guy was Beckett went to meet with.

The Flash 2x01
There’s a lot in this episode I feel could have been handled better even if overall I enjoyed it. Some of it could be addressed in the next episode (wasn’t STAR Labs about to be sold off or was it resolved once Barry watched the message?) and some of it I really think could have waited an episode (to be real, the party was way too happy, obviously something was going to happen to restore the status quo of Joe as Barry’s primary father figure, but give us an episode to see why Henry would choose to leave, because I’m not saying I don’t buy it at all, just not for this reason; I also needed some acknowledgement of his complicated feelings towards Joe). I’m perfectly okay with the fact that the villain of the week wasn’t really much of anything and instead just a story reason to bring the band back together, but then the actual plots are rarely the most important things for me when I prefer the overarching stories and character developments. I guess this explains why Ronnie wasn’t in the Legends of Tomorrow trailer, I don’t think I was the only one wondering about that, although this really sucks for Caitlin and I do expect it to be resolved at some point, possibly by LoT, but don’t have a guess as to when that will happen. Also, for a while I was wondering if Barry was going to be the moody loner this year and Oliver would get to be the well-adjusted one (as well-adjusted as Oliver can be at least); but then it reset to pretty much status quo so I am suspicious something similar will happen on Arrow to return to Oliver to his even-less-well-adjusted state.

Arrow 4x01
I’m not sure how I feel about that episode, I definitely wasn’t expecting some of the twists and I think it probably set up a lot of good stuff to come, but I think I need to see more before I’ll commit to whether it was well done. I’m really not sure what to make of the last scene so while I’m blindly speculating I’m not drawing any conclusions yet. I really thought I’d have more to say about this one, but I’m reserving so much judgement that I guess I don’t.

Once Upon a Tome 5x02
So...stuff happened in this one, but I’m just going to make a few observations.
-Seeing as in no way were Hook and Emma ever in True Love, I certainly never expected True Love’s Kiss to work for them. Funny enough they seem more functional in the Camelot story that I’ve ever seen them before, but I certainly wouldn’t call it True Love.
-I’ve seen people think the Merlin in a tree thing is somehow Pocahontas related, but it is actually part of many Arthurian stories that Merlin ended up trapped in a tree, including I believe in The Once and Future King which was what Disney’s Sword in the Stone mostly drew from (hence Excalibur being in the stone rather than from the Lady of the Lake). Now they’re clearly cherry picking bits of Arthurian lore to work with as they do with all the fairytales, but I thought it should be said.
-Dear gods is Morrison not a good enough actress to pull off this plot line.
