So I'm not the only one who didn't get that. It kind of blindsided me this episode when Shaheer said they'd broken up. I wasn't exactly invested in them as a ship but I liked them okay and am not crazy about them just being brushed aside.
I kind of liked the Joel/Alex in this week's episode, because I got the feeling that it was mostly one- sided.
That's how I've always seen them. And I don't really disagree with your reading of them here, in this moment that's pretty much how I see them too. It was just that behind the fairly balanced way they acted I was sensing the writers' machinations to change the direction of things. I'm a bit shell shocked when it comes to love triangles these days. And tired, I find love triangles tiring; and usually to the determent of all the characters involved.
And yet, for all I do like Charlie/Alex for it committed and functional-ness, I've always been interested in Joel/Alex in the abstract. I wanted to know more about their history and I thought it was pretty obvious by at least mid-s1 that - whether or not Joel had gotten over her years ago (debatable) - he was falling hard for her now, except he'd lost his chance with her. And that's really been the most interesting thing about his character to me, so yeah I don't hate it for its own sake, I'm just not sure how the show can do anything with it and keep the characters enjoyable.
I think part of my...disquiet with it actually doing something with this love triangle that I could always see was going to be a thing, is that I was so happy when s1 didn't go there. I didn't want or believe that Alex would cheat of her comatose fiance - but again, shell shocked when it comes to love triangles - so I heartily approved of her shutting things down the occasional time Joel acted on the fact that he was still into her. And yeah, I know it's a different situation now but s1 lulled me into a comfort zone with its show-OTP-ness and I dislike being pushed out of my comfort zones.
Now if the show is going through this angle to shake things up in the status quo of some of the other things on the show, I could certainly find some good to be had.
