If the show would actually let Liz, Carol, and Meredith be the voice of reason (they're willing to compromise but should still be able to see the flaws in letting this stuff go unchecked) we wouldn't need to count on the "villains" to do it for us. It took Klaus to point out that the Salvatores are awful for Elena, and I'm still not sure in the writers' eyes we were supposed to agree with that little speech but I hold out hope new guy will do something similar on a larger scale. But I've hoped that before...
