100 Reviews: 4
Yes I am aware I still haven’t written up my thoughts on last week’s TVD/the things that might happen tomorrow. But I did finally get back to my 100 reviews project at least.
Doctor Who 1x02: The End of the World
You know, back when I first watched these episodes I think I liked this one better that ‘Rose,’ but I don’t feel that way so much anymore. I think at the time I was really excited for some actual sci-fi TV with far flung futures and aliens and stuff. There’s really been a heavy shift in recent sci-fi to be very modern (understandable since it’s easier to make) and in that regard it’s still nice to see an episode like this (even say the New Earth episodes don’t give such a large scope since most characters we see are still human in clothing similar to that we have now).
And that feeds into a lot of why I’ve always loved Rose this episode. This episode creates a deep end just so they can throw her into it. And her behavior is all very relatable and human, she wants to have a good time and be able to deal with it but it’s a lot to deal with. She can’t quite decide if talking a twig I still odd or it if makes sense in this new world she’s in.
I have mixed feelings about the Doctor in this episode. He seems pretty spaztic, which could be the intent, that he hasn’t quite settled into his life yet. He wants to impress Rose, but he’s still drawn to destruction; Rose is his travelling companion but he hasn’t really decided on her as Companion yet, so he picks up Jabe to fill in the Companion role while Rose wanders about on her own. It all feels very...undecided, but I’m willing to give RTD the benefit of the doubt and think he intentionally wrote the character as undecided instead of being undecided himself on what to do with the Doctor.
I do have to say that I’m not a Cassandra fan, in either of her episodes. Cassandra is literally a blank screen for metaphor projection, that metaphor being whatever RTD wanted it to be at any given moment. She’s never worked for me as a character, but it stands out to me more now than it did at first.
There is a lot to like about this episode, the setting is wonderful and the plot is well paced and the ending scene is incredibly adorable (even if I did find myself staring at CE’s ears, I usually like them but I found them a little distracting today). It’s appropriately cheesy but fun with some pathos for our characters, Jabe is a pretty good episodic companion stand in, the acting is good there’s quite a few excellent moments for it to shine.
I think a lot of the problems I do have with the ep come from how separate the Doctor and Rose’s storylines are and I’m not sure they really play off each other very well. I’d expect them as characters to still be feeling out their relationship, but from a writing level I feel like their plots should have gone together better. But even that isn’t something I always object to so I could just be in a bad mood today.
In any case, I do like it, but only like it. There’s a lot of pieces to the fact that I like it but none that push it over into the love it level.
ETA because out of practice apparently:
Next time:
Either Firefly or TVD, up for suggestion on episode.
