Some thoughts on love triangles
Someone posted a link to think on
milady_milord and I want to make some comment on it, but I think I’ll do it here.
Divisive love triangles
There are an amazing number of these supposedly divisive triangles that I have the more divisive opinion of all toward: NEITHER. Or I just don’t care, because the triangle left me with strong feelings for neither side. Basically there’s a disproportionately high level of me not playing the game here (and that’s among the ones that I know about, half of them aren’t relisted here because I don’t know anything about them).
Then again, this is tilted towards less niche genre shows, absolutely no DW ship wars here. But then we know where I fall on that. Still I'm only talking about the ones I have opinions regarding, even if the opinion is NO.
Wes/Fred/Gunn (Angel): First off, I don’t think this is all that divisive a love triangle, from what little I know of AtS fandom the conflict is more between Wes/Fred shippers and Wes/Gunn ones. That said I come down slightly on the Fred/Gunn side, but I don’t mind Fred/Wes either. I have objections to how it was written, but I have that for both sides actually, just F/W stands out more because it was very compact in its awkward writing.
Apollo/Starbuck/Anders (BSG): I actually have FEELINGS for both side of this triangle (which is actually a love square and more but they didn’t seem to think Lee/Dee was very divisive; they’re probably right), because I do like all the characters but at the end of the day I ship Lee/Kara even if I do feel bad for Sam while I do it.
Spike/Buffy/Angel (Buffy): NEITHER with an additional DIE SPIKE DIE IN A FIRE AND STAY DEAD FOREVER GRRRR. I may not ship B/A but I don’t *hate* it the way I do B/S. I ship Buffy with Giles, Xander, or Willow in that order, with Faith probably coming in fourth. Let’s just say I don’t want her with either of these manpires (file this feeling away to be brought up again later).
Britta/Jeff/Annie (Community): Jeff/Annie is my thing (as you might be able to guess from where I found out about this whole thing). From my POV it’s more of a pro vs. anti J/A issue than a love triangle that divides fandom, but I do have kind of a narrow POV on it.
Joey/Rachel/Ross (Friends): Um, was this one all that divisive either? This mainly came up during my freshman year of college when I was falling for Buffy and pretty much dropped non British sitcoms, and I was never in fandom for Friends, but wasn’t it always obviously Ross/Rachel? I never really even considered that it would go any other way.
Dean/Rory/Jess (Gilmore Girls): While I wouldn’t say I was hardcore for it I did like Dean/Rory, which is more than I can say for Rory/Jess. Jess is another one of those characters that just did nothing for me, except when he’d piss me off. So I was never going to ship him with a character I actually liked.
Luke/Lorelai/Christopher (Gilmore Girls): I think this only became a real big controversy during the last season of the show, which I didn’t watch so I can’t speak to that. However, I tended to like Chris when he was around, but he wasn’t around that much so I didn’t get too invested. L/L on the other hand I was kind of invested in. But I think mainly I shipped Lorelai/happiness, so whatever made her happy I was down for (and believed Luke was the better chance of that usually).
Artie/Tina/Mike (Glee): I passively shipped Artie/Tine in season 1 and it did take me a while to let go of it but by this point I like Tina/Mike (it helps when Mike got an actual character). Another one I have to wonder if it’s all that divisive, particularly any more, since clearly Artie/Tina have both moved on and aren’t really a ship any more.
Barney/Robin/Ted (How I Met Your Mother): Ted/Robin baby; mine is a lonely fandom which means I question how this is divisive since I don’t know a lot of people who agree with me. Another one of those that mostly boils down to disliking one of the characters, Barney, so not going to ship him with a character I love, Robin. That and I think Ted/Robin are really damn cute together.
Dwight/Angela/Andy (The Office): Another of those that I do think was divisive at the time, but really doesn’t seem to count any more. The show always made it pretty clear that Andy wasn’t all that big a deal to Angela, so while I wouldn’t say I heavily ship Dwight/Angela I never could ship Angela/Andy at all so I default toward D/A.
Henry/Betty/Gio (Ugly Betty): DANIEL. Look, I HATED Betty/Gio really really hard. And Betty/Henry was cute in s1, but s2 and onward I disliked it most of the time. This love triangle was really what *drove* me to shipping Betty/Daniel, because when canon gets so into a love triangle I dislike both sides of I start looking for another option, and UB provided a really nice third option (that eventually was the way canon went).
Stefan/Elena/Damon (The Vampire Diaries): Neither. Up through season 2 my answer would have been ‘neither for the long term, but for the short term I don’t mind either.’ Now it’s ‘Elena PLEASE run off to Europe with Elijah and get away from these two yucks who do not deserve you awesomeness.’
Tyler/Caroline/Klaus (The Vampire Diaries): Hey, it’s one I feel kind of torn on. Because I don’t ship Tyler/Caroline really, I get it but it doesn’t interest me; and I think Caroline/Klaus have a great dynamic going that interests me a lot but I can’t ship it on the grounds of Klaus.
Logan/Veronica/Duncan (Veronica Mars): Neither, but for different reasons. I just dislike Logan so there will be no shipping him with Veronica; but I don’t really think Veronica/Duncan ever had much of a future together, especially after Lily died. And just to make sure I piss off everyone, I *liked* Veronica/Piz (although it wasn’t my top Veronica ship either, it just beats out these options).
And a couple honorable mentions:
Tim/Lyla/Jason (Friday Night Lights): I did watch the first couple seasons of FNL when they first aired, but my opinions have dulled from what little they were to start with. Mainly I was never a fan of Tim, especially Tim in shipping situations, so I did kind of prefer Lyla/Jason by default.
Chuck/Blair/Dan (Gossip Girl): My flist is pretty heavily Blair/Dan and I think I would be too if I watched the show. But then I can predict with a high probability of correctness that I would *despise* Chuck if I watched it so my choice would be easy.

With an annoying whisper voice apparently.
