You could say Pepper left the light on him at night when he flew off in the Iron Man suit, but usually it was because she was still up doing his other job being head of Stark Industries. She might glare at him when he returned but she was always relieved when he came home safely.

Real love stories, even ones with super heroes, didn’t end at ‘happily ever after.’ And especially ones with super heroes didn’t necessarily end with two kids and a dog in the yard. Pepper mostly worried something would happen before the issue ever came up.

Jackie kept an eye on her sons daring each other to jump off higher and higher steps, ready to step in if they got too much higher. She wondered how she had given birth to three daredevils and could only hope the boys didn’t take it as far as Rose had.

Trevor and Randy may have every advantage Rose had lacked growing up, but they showed early signs of their sister’s drive to jump and reach higher and higher. And when they stumbled they always got up and tried again; Jackie still wasn’t sure where her kids had gotten that.

He saw his own hands almost as though they belonged to a stranger, but he knew he would know those other hands if he ever held them. Even if the strongest shred of memory was the feel as they slipped from his own, and the screaming

He never did know if the screams he remembered were his or hers.

Simon and Kaylee were playing up the oblivious couple in love on the other side of the cafe. Though the line between the reality and the act was rather blurred, even to those that knew they were there to keep an extra set of eye on Mal and Zoe’s meeting.

If Zoe hadn’t known they were acting she would have been more jealous of them, but then she wouldn’t have known them or the act. She missed Wash, but her friends weren’t the people whose happiness she envied, it was strangers whose stories she didn’t know that pained her more.

Viktor swam hard for the surface of the lake, Hermione grasped in his arms. He wasn’t sure how much longer he could keep up his shark transfiguration and he was close to the time limit. All of his focus was on reaching his goal, he couldn’t entertain other thoughts.

When Hermione woke up as they swam to shore and asked about Harry, Victur finally thought about what had happened under the water. Harry should be back, he should have beaten Victur, but he had stayed, watching over everyone’s hostage. Maybe he could understand what Hermione saw in the other boy.

It had been an hour since rehearsal let out and Rachel still wouldn’t stop complaining that the director wouldn’t let her carry a parasol in the show. “I mean, how is it any more distracting if I have one if Gwendolen already carries hers around?” she kept restating in various ways. She’d thought the director subpar from the start, and this was just the latest insult to her talent.

Finn just nodded, he knew Rachel didn’t really want or need him to answer her questions except when she asked: ‘Are you listening to me?’ That he had better answer quickly.

Zach looked at the cheerleaders seated on the outdoor steps, part of him trying to deny the fact that he was looking for Claire. She wasn’t likely to ever come home now, after being missing for so long, but there were days he still wondered if she would just reappear as suddenly as she had disappeared.

Maybe once he got out of Odessa it would be easier not to think about her, but this town was boring enough that looking for her and reports of people who might be like her were usually the most exciting parts of his day.

Laura used to like Colonial Day until she entered politics. Working in politics the day was a choreographed series of public relations rather than a free day to enjoy fun and comradely with one’s neighbors.

Still, at least she wasn’t Richard. He didn’t get to just enjoy any freedoms others did. When she wasn’t needed she could slip into the crowd unnoticed and enjoy some of the festivities without thinking about Adar’s public image. Laura didn’t want to ever be the person who had to worry about politics on Colonial Day

The Gods didn’t listen or take that into account.

Jackie found Daniel where she had expected to, on the back porch swing where he and Rose had spent so much time. She was grateful he was safe, even if she couldn’t entirely deny that part of her resented that he was safe and not Rose.

Still, she sat down next to her son-in-law while he stared out at the setting sun. “I’ll find her Jackie, I swear I will.”

Jackie nodded, knowing he couldn’t promise that as much as either of them wished he could, but she tried to believe him anyway.

Together they watched the stars come out.

It turned out to be impossible to explain the full meaning of the phrase “hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk” to people who had no sidewalks and few eggs after Daniel accidentally said it around his Abydonian family. He settled for simply explaining that it meant it was very hot out, which made the Abydonians laugh as it was still spring and he had not been here for a summer heat yet.

Sha’re was always curious about where he came from though and wanted to know everything about what the phrase meant. She would have loved Earth.
