Summer in the North was warmer than Catelyn had expected. Growing up, in her mind the North was always cold and snow, even Brandon had spoken of summer snows. Ned agreed summer snow did happen, but in the North as anywhere else saw much higher temperatures during summer years.

“In Riverrun we would swim in the rivers to keep cool,” she told Ned one night by way of proposing they venture out for a swim.

He smiled a thin smile at that. “Best not. Northern waters are made from snow and ice; and they remember the cold.”

Kahlan and Denee reigned in their horses as the sun rose over Aydindril. They were already well away from the city as the sun rose over the valley but they had a good view from atop the hill. Too good a view of the doom that approached ever nearer the great city in the form of Rahl’s armies.

They were still distant, but it wouldn’t be long until they reached the city, the last truly free city in the Midlands. That was why it was so important that they find the Seeker, that he might save them from such devastation.

Coming to live in a new universe was difficult, on many levels. Rose had to learn a whole new history and culture from the one she had known, and had to keep track of her own cover story so she didn’t slip up and have people find out she didn’t have common knowledge about this world.

Just about everything was different and that it pretty hard not to slip up. And more personally it made it hard to feel at home here.

But it turned out that ice cream trucks played the same song here as they did at home.

It had been five years, and she certainly didn’t perform this ritual every day, but she still liked to think she could feel it as Will returned from the underworld. And that he could feel her and know she waited for him.

She could only dream what it would be like to actually wake up next to her husband.

The beach was deserted when they landed and soon Rose had coaxed the Doctor out of his clothes and into skinny-dipping with her. It hadn’t been terribly hard to talk him into it once she’d started shedding her own clothing.

The water was cool and they swam for over an hour before returning to the shore where the Doctor kissed her hard and started to lay her down on his sprawled long coat.

Then they heard a gasp and looked up to find that they had landed someplace with 1940’s swimwear rather than the pleasure planet they had aimed for.

Katherine had come along just as they were starting to finally grow out of it, and had them competing over her for more than a hundred years. Long after Stefan stopped obsessing over her he was still determined to prove that Damon was no better than him in that history.

It wasn’t even a competition for Elena’s affections, and even understanding that she didn’t want them fighting over her, they treated it like one.

This was easily the most foolish thing he had ever done for love of Marian, this was surely going to get them both killed and avoiding that was what had brought him here. But knowing Vasey, Guy knew it could only be for some ugly reason Marian wasn’t already dead; even if Guy couldn’t guess what that reason was.

Marian would probably be foolish enough to still try and save the king once they were free, assuming they got free. Guy would have to put stop her from entertaining those notions.

Until she talked him into it anyway no doubt.

Admittedly this was tame next to some of the food they were offered off-world, and admittedly Daniel had nearly always been more willing to sample the local cooking than Jack. Still ever since Daniel had started dating Ms. Tyler he’d thrown himself into that aspect of their missions even more whole-heartedly.

It was going to bite him in the ass eventually, and then Jack could blame it on Tyler. The girl was trouble, and her influence on Daniel was just part of the problem. It just happened to be the one that was most shoved in Jack’s face these days.

And although he never saw her, it didn’t take him long to decide that the presence he always sensed with him was Kara. Whatever else Kara had been before the end, she had still been Kara, and he didn’t think she would be completely gone that quickly.

He sensed her most strongly whenever he entered some new untouched stretch of earth. And once or twice, when he would look around it seemed that she’d even left him a sign she was there.

Strangely Mya found Alayne in the Godswood, a strange and desolate place at the Gates of the Moon. Even if it was quiet there, unlike the rest of the castle, Mya would hardly have lain on the cold ground looking up at the sky, crisp blue though it was.

She cleared her throat so Alayne would know she wasn’t alone anymore. “Yes?” Alayne asked properly.

“It’s nearly time for the feast, my lady,” Mya reminded her. As always Alayne didn’t find anything odd about being called a lady.

Alayne rose from the snow; she left Sansa behind in the Godswood.
