As soon as the words were out of his mouth his entire demeanor reset. The harsh look on his face instantly replaced with curiosity, his rough grip on her arm now just firm enough to keep her from leaving, his voice softened for his next question, “What are you doing here?”

Elena took a deep breath and reset herself to remain calm under his scrutiny. “I could ask you the same question, but I guess I don’t really need to.”

The hardness of his look came back a little; he doesn’t want her to know about this, and now that she does he’s going to have to figure out what to say very quickly. “You haven’t answered my questions yet.”

“Oh don’t worry about Katherine,” she said and reached up with her free hand to pat his chest condescendingly. “I’m just trying to figure out what she’s been up to, which apparently would be – playing you for a fool.”

“Elena,” he warned.

“How would you define it then?” He would call the slight mirth in her voice teasing but it had too much cruelty in it for teasing; at least from Elena, it makes her seem more like Katherine than she did when she was trying to fool him.

He would define it as an effort to be the noble man he claims to be, the man she’s defended and offered compassion to on more than one occasion. But now was hardly the time to try and explain that, so he looked away and only then remembered where they were. “We should speak in private,” he suggested.

She shrugged in his grasp. “Not my town, I don’t know where to go.”

He strode out of the gazebo, her hand still clutched in his. “Come with me.” She didn’t have a lot of choice, but she followed willingly enough. His grip on her hand now wasn’t rough but it was a far cry from his innocent fantasies of walking hand in hand with her down some garden path, courting her with gentleness that would have disgraced his father, amused his siblings, and shamed Stefan and Damon. (Certainly there were other, mostly far less innocent fantasies, but it was the idyllic dream that seemed most lost to him now.)

They covered the few blocks quickly until he found a covered alley at the edge of the park where they should be undisturbed. Only then did he let go of her, and could barely face her once he did. His hands felt awkward so he shoved them in his pockets; his ears could not help but listen for the sound of her heartbeat, but the hollow sound of a vampire’s heart was nothing like the rush of hers while she lived; his lips still remembered kissing her, the fulfillment of his secret dreams but in a way he could not savor.

“You wanted to talk, so talk,” she said carelessly. He leaned heavily against the stone wall, his eyes fixed on a point somewhere near her feet, but the words would not come. “Or maybe you’re rather I went back to pretending to be Katherine?” she offered seductively.

His eyes flew to her face, to find her slipping back into her Katherine façade; her finger curled around her lips (lips he had kissed), her head cocked to the side while her eyes danced with amusement. It’s not a bad impersonation, but how could it have ever fooled him? Already if he replayed their meeting in his mind he wondered how he could have been deceived for a moment.

She stalked towards him, swaggered with an exaggerated form of Katherine’s confidant walk, “Is that what you want me to be?” she mocked.

He shook his head, and replied, “Never.” His voice was low and course with strangled emotion, the word pulled from his heart without consulting his mind; his mind knew better than to say such things to her.

His response seemed to shock her, as she stopped approaching him and looked at him with new consideration. But it passed quickly and she turned away.

He was still trying to think of a way to explain his actions when his phone rang.
